Perhaps the reason we love the sound of Big Dave’s voice…
is because we clock he’s about to remind us of things that have been going on for millennia beyond the realm of our foolish daily TikTokery, and we also understand despite forgetting all too often that being reminded of nature and its might and its cleverness and its wisdom brings us peace, because we understand our unimportance, removing us for a quiet minute from ourselves and our silly self-obsessions.
Somewhere right this minute the wild geese, high in the clean blue air, are heading home again.
You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
For a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
The world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting –
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.
Look at us the big-brained apes with our eighty year priorities so clever we made ourselves cruel and we make ourselves sad and believe our superiority and press lego blocks into a huge heaving 6 billion year old sphere floating in something so terrifying we can’t bring ourselves to think about it.
